For those unfamiliar with swimming terminology, the concept of “Ups” and “Downs” is a good way to track which teams performed best at prelims. In prelims, swimmers qualify for one of three finals heats: the top 8 finishers make the A final, places 9 through 16 the B final and places 17 through 24 the C final. In finals, swimmers are locked into their respective final, meaning a swimmer in the B heat (spots 9-16) can only place as high as 9th or as low as 16th, even if they put up the fastest or slowest time of any heat in the final.
With that in mind, we’ll be tracking “Ups,” “Mids” and “Downs” after each prelims session. “Up” refers to swimmers in the A final, “Mid” to swimmers in the B final and “Down” to swimmers in the C final.
Team Scores – End of Day 2
- Indiana – 526
- Michigan – 419.5
- Ohio State – 413
- USC – 281
- Wisconsin – 272
- Northwestern – 262
- Minnesota – 260
- Purdue – 223.5
- Penn St. – 153
Indiana had almost 100 points on Michigan, and they are looking to pick up even more points tonight, having a very strong prelims performance, including taking the top 5 spots in the 100 breaststroke, putting 13 total swimmers in the ‘A’ finals and looking at scoring 407 points today.
Michigan will be looking to stay ahead of Ohio State, and they had the prelims performance to make that happen, coming in with eight swimmers in ‘A’ finals.
Tonight is the biggest point session of the meet, and we have scored it out without diving because we do not have diving preliminary results yet. That could make an impact on some of the team placements and their scoring as there are another 362 points up for grabs in that event.
