Freshmen Impress As Penn Women Earn Wins Over Richmond, ECU

RICHMOND, Va. – It was a successful first meet of the year for the University of Pennsylvania women’s swimming and diving team, beating out host Richmond and East Carolina Saturday afternoon at SwimRVA.

Swimming concluded the weekend after diving took place on Richmond’s campus Friday night.

The Quakers’ freshman contingent immediately impressed as Amy Qin (100 backstroke), Kayla Fu (100 freestyle), and Maggie Hu (100 butterfly) each recorded first-place finishes in their respective events, totaling three of Penn’s nine wins on the day.

*The morning started with a Penn victory in the 200 medley relay as Qin, Keara McGowan, Hu, and Fu swam a 1:43.43 to finish first.

*Anna Boeckman made her return to the pool with a victory in the 1,000 free, recording a time of 10:14.27, just barely edging out teammate Sydney Bergstrom (10:14.42).

*Qin tallied Penn’s first individual win by the Class of 2028 in the 100 back, timing in at 55.33 while narrowly topping Kate Levensten (2:03.78).

*Joy Jiang brought home victory in the 200 fly with a time of 2:02.27 while Emma Stolberg took third at 2:03.78.

*Fu won the 100 free with a time of 50.90, topping Qin (51.97) by just over a second.

*Kate Levensten was victorious in the 200 backstroke with her time of 1:59.81. Katya Eruslanova came in second (2:01.49).

*Anna Moehn put forth a dominant effort in the 500 free with a sub-five minute time of 4:58.42, while Stolberg took third at 5:05.54.

*Hu won the 100 fly at 56.02, just five-tenths quicker than Jiang at 56.07.

*Eruslanova was able to get herself a win in the 400 IM, clocking a 4:24.01. Erica Maltsev started her Penn career off with a third-place finish in the event at 4:27.31.

*In diving, freshman Rachel Yang had a strong effort in the one-meter dive, scoring a 271.70 to place third. Sadie Howard took fourth at 247.80 and Madeleine Parker sixth (222.60).

*Yang also scored a 256.45 to finish third in the three-meter dive, while Parker notched a 232.65 to finish sixth and Howard took seventh at 226.65.

The Penn women continue their season Wednesday evening at Villanova. Action on the Main Line with the ‘Cats is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.

RICHMOND, Va. – The East Carolina women’s swimming and diving team returned to action Friday night and Saturday morning competing in the Richmond Dual Meet drawing a split against Richmond (win/204-95) and Pennsylvania (loss/169-130).

“We had a good meet,” head coach Matthew Jabs said. “I saw some very impressive swims/dives out of our girls. We’ll now turn 100 percent of our focus to our mid-season invite at South Carolina. Very excited to see what we do at that meet. A huge shout out to our Pirate fans, family, alumni, and friends. We had more Pirates in the stands than the other two team’s fans combined. So much appreciation for that kind of support.”

In the diving well, redshirt junior Frida Zuniga Guzman captured top honors in both the 1-meter (290.75) and 3-meter (300.30) dives, while sophomore Olivia Templeton placed second in both events with scores of 277.40 (1-meter) and 274.05 (3-meter). Also competing for the Pirates was freshman Kinsley Baker who finished seventh in the 1-meter (221.55) and fourth in the 3-meter (248.60).

Junior Heidi Bruining won the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.44) while sophomore Carlie Clements finished fifth (1:53.87). Junior Laura Lopez finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (57.29) while fellow classmate Sadie Covington placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:23.96.

Senior Kaylee Hamblin won the 100-yard backstroke finishing a full second ahead of the second-place swimmer with a time of 1:03.46. Sophomore Juliana Kratka placed third in the event posting a time of 1:05.71. Junior Sara Kalawska earned a pair of wins against Richmond posting season best times in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.88) and 100-yard butterfly (56.10) taking second in both events. Junior Emilee Hamblin finished fourth in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:04.60.

Sophomores Mikayla Durkin (23.82) and Clements (24.41) placed third and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, while Durkin took third in the 100-yard freestyle (52.03). Sophomore Elena Dinehart finished third in the 200-yard backstroke (2:03.16) and Kaylee Hamblin placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:19.16).

In the 500-yard freestyle, Emilee Hamblin finished second (5:04.60) and Covington placed fifth (5:08.34). Freshman Abbey Pickel posted two lifetime best scores in the 400IM (4:38.68) finishing fourth and in the 200-butterfly (2:06.36) placing seventh.

ECU won the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.45 and finished second in the 200-yard medley (1:45.41).

The Pirates return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 20 when they participate in the South Carolina Invite (swimming only). The three-day event begins at 8 a.m. (ET) in Columbia, S.C. and runs through Friday afternoon.

RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond women’s swimming and diving team closed out day two of the Penn & ECU Dual Meet today at SwimRVA. The Spiders fell to East Carolina 204-95 and fell to Penn 210-87.

Richmond took first in two events:

With Nwakalor’s time in the 50 free, she made a College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) National Invitational Championship (NIC) B standard in the pool today.

The freestyle events saw success as Natalie Stuart placed fourth and swam a season best (10:36.97) in the 1000 and Katie Chignell finished behind in fifth (10:41.24). In the 200, Lena Amare finished fourth (1:53.52). In the 100, Nwakalor finished fourth (52.22). Erin Budde finished with a new season best placing sixth (5:13.51) in the 500.

In the 100 back, Caroline Weldon finished fourth (57.82).

Primiano added a silver finish (1:04.92) with a new season best in the 100 breast. Teammate Laura Davis also finished with a season best finishing sixth (2:25.12) in the 200 breast.

Madisyn Carter added another season best to the Spiders team in the 100 fly, finishing sixth (58.54).

In the IM, Amare finished second (4:24.01), Chignell finished fifth (4:32.70) and Davis finished sixth (4:33.09).
In the 400 free relay, the Spiders relay (A) finished second (3:30.01) and Richmond’s other relay (B) finished in fourth (3:36.68).

The Spiders return to action on Thursday, November 21 for the Patriot Invite in Fairfax, Va. for three days of competition.
