Texas junior Hubert Kos continues to go on a tear at the 2025 NCAA championships. A day after winning the 200 IM and claiming his first NCAA title, he claimed victory in the 100 back and broke the NCAA record in the event. His time of 43.20 takes 0.15 off Luca Urlando‘s previous record, set at the 2022 NCAA championships.
Kos betters his best time of 43.75 from the 2024 Pac-12 Championships.
Also in Kos’s heat, Florida sophomore Jonny Marshall went a time of 43.22, also passing Urlando. Marshall had been leading for the majority of the race, but Kos passed him on the final 25.
All-Time Top Performers, Men’s 100-yard Backstroke:
- Hubert Kos, Texas — 43.20 (2025)
- Jonny Marshall, Florida — 43.22 (2025)
- Luca Urlando, Georgia — 43.35 (2022)
- Ryan Murphy, Cal — 43.49 (2016)
- Kacper Stokowski, NC State — 43.57 (2024)
Kos was slower than both Marshall and Urlando on his opening 50. However, his back half torched both swimmers by over three-tenths.
Split Comparison:
Hubert Kos, 2025 NCAA Championships (NCAA record) | Jonny Marshall, 2025 NCAA Championships | Luca Urlando, 2022 NCAA Championships (former NCAA record) | |

1ooy | 22.21 | 22.52 | 22.59 |

With Kos’s 100 back win, he now has a good chance of going three for three in individual events at these championships. He still has the 200 back to race, the event where he is an Olympic and short course world champion. However, he will have his hands full with Destin Lasco, the NCAA record holder and three-time reigning champion in the event.
